I wouldn't have gone there if l'd known, and I only did because a friend said I should. Basically, it was a hotel complex on the coast and a long way from anywhere. The hotel arranged some excursions to 'ancient monuments', but these were only ruins and not worth going to. That left sitting outside or going for walks. I wish l'd taken a book to occupy my mind. And it was generally cloudy so I didn't get back with the tan l'd been hoping for. I don't know what my friend was on about.
It was the first time I was in a foreign city all by myself, where I didn't speak the language. I printed out maps of the city and set out exploring the maze of streets. It wasn't as hot as I'd expected, so I was able to walk around without having to stop to buy water. It's a fascinating city and should be on everyone's list of places to visit. And the experience of being alone in a strange city and coping makes me think l'll be able to deal with challenges better.

I don't like sitting by the sea for hours. I find it boring. So I focused on seeing the local sights. Armed with a city map, I felt confident I could find my way around. I loved the market, and trying the local produce. I even climbed a minaret, but when I got out at the top, I was so high that I couldn't open my eyes and missed the view. The prices in the shops were more than I had bargained for and I had to be careful to keep within budget, but I made sure I came back with some souvenirs.
I went on a group tour but I didn't know the other people and I had nothing in common with them so I felt quite left out, which was no fun I can tell you. And there were far too many places to see and I got quite sick of getting in and out of buses for just a glimpse of an important sight. So I sought solace in shopping - I went quite over budget, but never mind. And in eating - I have to get rid of a couple of kilos to get ready for the beach in the summer. Never again.

I'm afraid of flying so I went by car. l'd forgotten how dirty the place was. After the first night, I avoided the hostels and the bed bugs and cockroaches that inhabit them and slept in my car. To be safe, I didn't touch the local dishes but only cooked rice on my camping stove. Even so, I came down with something that took me a couple of days to recover from. But it gave me a slimline look I was quite proud of while it lasted. The first thing I did when I got back was to have a long bath.

It wasn't what I expected, I'm afraid. I was familiar with the sights, having seen them on Google images, but the tour itself was well below standard. The accommodation was not the quality advertised, and I had to force the meals down me so as not to go hungry - I'm so glad to be back to home cooking. I know it wasn't meant to be a luxury holiday but l'd have expected more for the price I paid. Still, it was an experience to remember.
